The Turquoise Gemstone : The Stone of Wisdom and Spiritual Journeys

The Turquoise Gemstone : The Stone of Wisdom and Spiritual Journeys

Although turquoise is mined around the world, the most famous turquoise jewelry comes from the southwestern United States. Without question, the Navajo and Zuni silversmiths from the Four Corners region of New Mexico and Arizona produce the finest. They create myriad forms of inlaid turquoise and silver jewelry, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pendants, brooches, belt buckles, bola ties, watchbands, and even barrettes.

Nor will you have trouble recognizing the style. It's as distinctive as it is beautiful. Turquoise and shells are meticulously cut, fitted and inlaid contiguously in handcrafted silver jewelry, then sanded and polished to perfection. Some of the more contemporary versions include channel setting. The best of Native American turquoise silver jewelry still stands as a cultural expression of a proud people with a remarkable heritage, shown through the magnificence of their craftsmanship and imagination.

In addition to shell, the contemporary stylists of turquoise jewelry have also spun off tradition by combining a variety of other inlays, including lapis lazuli, purple sugilite, malachite, jet and coral. They also employ different types of shell, such as mother-of-pearl, spiny oyster, pink shell, white shell, melon shell and red abalone.

Turquoise is the birthstone for those born in December

Turquoise gemstones come in a wide range of natural colors and shades including blue, green and yellow-green. It is considered the birthstone of the month of December and the wedding anniversary gemstone for the 5th and 11th year of marriage. It is also attributed to the Zodiac sign Sagittarius.

For centuries, the most valuable turquoise was considered as originating in Iran (Persia). Areas of the Southwestern United States now compete with this honor."Persian Turquoise" is now generally used to refer to any turquoise stone that does not have the black or brown veining commonly found in turquoise mined in the United States and used in a style of jewelry created by the American Indians. The Aztecs mined turquoise and a significant amount of turquoise comes from New Mexico, California, Nevada and Arizona.

Turquoise has long been appreciated as a holy stone, a good-luck-charm or a mystical talisman. It is believed to promote good fortune, happiness, and long life.
December Ode to The gemstone Turquoise:

"If cold December gave you birth The month of snow and ice and mirth Place on your hand a turquoise blue Success will bless whate'er you do."

The Topaz gemstone : The Stone of True Love and Success

Topaz is one of the twelve breastplate stones of the High Priest referred to in the Book of Exodus. The breastplate stones are considered sacred to twelve mighty angels who guard the gates to Paradise.

Silver Topaz is colorless and untreated. Colorless topaz is often irradiated and heat treated to form blue topaz. Silver Topaz is also called "white topaz".

Topaz is a gemstone of all colors, and its most valuable color is a golden orange-yellow, called "imperial topaz". Topaz is commonly thought of as a sky-blue gem, but it was not until this century that blue topaz became widespread on the gem market. Natural blue topaz with a deep hue is very uncommon in nature; colorless to light hued stones are heat-treated to achieve the blue color. Likewise, topaz rarely occurs naturally in pink; virtually all pink topaz is heat treated from yellow or brownish material.

Some topaz from Russian localities are notorious for fading upon prolonged exposure to light. Stones from these localities are undesirable as gems. One should always inquire about the origin of the topaz before buying it to make sure it will not fade.

Topaz of all different colors are used in jewelry. The orange, pink, and blue colors are most often cut for gems, and colorless topaz is sometimes cut with the brilliant cut, resembling diamond. Topaz is sometimes found as enormous flawless crystals, and some gigantic gems and faceted spheres have been formed from them, making unique and exquisite gem pieces. Topaz is rarely cut into cabochons.

Topaz meaning a soothing, empathetic stone that will direct energy to the place it is most needed. It heals and energizes. Topaz is a promoter of truth and forgiveness. Use it to find your own path.

Topaz is the birthstone for those born in November

The traditional birthstone for November is the topaz. (Citrine is also considered a gemstone for November.) Topaz is also the birthstone for the zodiac sign Scorpio and the gemstone for the 16th wedding anniversary.

Topaz is a very durable and hard gemstone. It is rated 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness and is quite resistant to scratching. It is the hardest silicate mineral and one of the hardest minerals in nature.

As with other gemstones, Topaz has mystical properties associated with it. It has long been attributed with gentleness, integrity and fidelity and it thought to bring wearers love, wealth and protection. In a physical sense, topaz is thought to aid with poor appetite, gout, blood disorders, hemorrhages, and diseases of the endocrine system.

The Opal Gemstone : The Queen of Gemstones

History and General Information of Natural Opal Gemstone

The word opal comes from a combination of the Sanskrit word ‘upala’ and the Latin word ‘opalus’, both of which mean precious stone’ The opulent flashes of color that are displayed by the opal gemstone cannot be compared to any other gemstone, making it phenomenally popular the world over. It has been regarded as the luckiest and most magical of all gems because of the special display of all colors of the rainbow.

The opal rough was first mined in Czechoslovakia (former Hungary) in the 14th century. However, in the 1800’s the gem lost its popularity since it was associated with bad luck. Like the many hues of its flashing colors, myriad legends are associated with the opal. While the Romans believed that the gem was a sign of love and hope, the Arabs believed that the gem fell from the heavens to flash its light on earth. Australian legends will have us believe that a huge opal governs the stars and the gold mines, guiding human love.
On the other hand it is also believed that the gem was actually a devil hiding in the ground with destructive flashes of wicked magic. Opal gemstones are delicate and therefore requires careful handling. However, the sheer beauty of this gemstone outweighs this disadvantageous physical property.

The play of color makes the opal one of the favorite gemstones for jewelry. Opal jewelry like opal rings, opal earrings, opal pendants, opal wedding rings, black opal mens rings, opal engagement rings and even antique opal rings have become fairly popular. Irrespective of whether the jewelry is made of australian opals, black opals, pink opals, cherry opals or any other specific opal type, the display of colors is what makes each item look fantastic.

The chemical composition of opal gem stone is a hydrous silicate di-oxide (SiO2 + nH2O). The specific gravity ranges between 1.98 and 2.20 and the refractive index ranges from 1.44 to 1.46. The hardness of the opal on the Mohs scale is generally between 5.5 and 6. The opal is mostly made up of silica and is a very delicate stone. It also contains a significant amount of water (usually between 3 and 10 percent). In most cases, the gem is accompanied by fair amounts of cristobalite.

Opals are classified according to the base or body color and the play of color that it displays. The five main types of opals commonly seen in gemstone trade circles are:

1) Black opal
2) White opal
3) Crystal opal
4) Water opal
5) Fire opal

Opals are the birthstone for those born in October

The opal is considered the birthstone for the month of October. The opal is also the gemstone for the 13th wedding anniversary. The opal has often been called the "Queen of Gemstones." It takes its name from the Latin word upala, which means precious stone. This stunning gemstone has flashes of rainbow-like colors when it is viewed from different angles. This color combination is created by silica spheres which are contained within the opal.

Opals have been mined in various locations around the world but, by far, the largest deposits have been found in Australia - with 95% of the world's opals originating there. Other sources of mines include Mexico, Africa, the US, Brazil, parts of the old Soviet Union and a few other areas in South America.

There are many metaphysical properties associated with opals. For centuries, people have believed in the healing power of opals. They are thought to help with depression and to enable the wearer to find true love and happiness. Some believe that they enhance the positive qualities of those born under the signs of Cancer, Aries and Scorpio.

The opal is said to be many things including the most powerful of healing stones, the stone of hope, the stone of great achievement and even the "stone of the Gods". It is said to be the stone of love, but only to faithful lovers. The opal will bring misfortune to an unfaithful lover.

The Sapphire Gemstone : The Stone of Loyalty and Fidelity

Color is of paramount importance when judging the value of sapphire. The purer the blue of a natural sapphire, the greater the price the gemstone can command. Gems that are too dark or too pale are usually less valuable, but not necessarily less appealing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and color preferences are subjective.

In recent years technology has perfected the process of heat-treating sapphires--exposing them to very high temperatures to eliminate impurities. In fact most sapphires on the market today have been heat-treated to improve clarity and color. This process is stable and does not affect the value of the gem, except at the highest level of the market.

Occasionally, colorless to pale blue sapphire is diffusion treated. This process alters the color of a gem by exposing the surface to certain chemicals (the same used by nature). The treatment is fairly stable, but it is confined to the surface of the gem only. This could create a problem, if the sapphire is ever badly chipped or nicked and needs to be recut or repolished. Diffusion treatment is not the same as heat treatment. My Jewelz only sells natural or stable, heat-treated sapphires of exceptional color in our Gem Store exclusive collection.

Additionally, some fancy sapphire is irradiated to produce intense shades of yellow or orange. This process, however, is not very stable. The temporary color produced by this method can quickly fade in light or heat. It is important to buy fine sapphire from a reputable retailer who will provide, in writing, all pertinent information regarding the gem including enhancements and special care notes.

A gem's clarity and cut also factor into its cost, as well as carat weight. Better quality sapphires are usually eye-clean with some inclusions under magnification. Sapphire is more available in sizes under two carats, but gems of 5 to 10 carats are not unusual. Sapphire reaches a far greater size than ruby.
Sapphires are the birthstone for those born in September

The sapphire is considered the modern and traditional birthstone for the month of September. It is also given as gifts for the 5th, 23rd, and 45th wedding anniversary. The word sapphire comes from the Greek word "sappheiros" which means precious stone. It is highly prized as gemstones. Sapphires have long been worn by priests, who associate the stone with purity, and also kings who thought that they symbolized wisdom. They have been used in Vintage and Antique jewelry since early times.

Sapphires are a member of the corundum family, as are rubies. All colors of corundum other than red are considered sapphires, but colors other than blue are called "fancy sapphires." The most prized color is cornflower blue.

Metaphysical qualities associated with sapphires are that they enable the wearer with clairvoyance and insight. The healing properties associated with the gem are that it is effective for health problems relating to hearing problems, cancer and burns. It also is supposed to lower fevers and aid in inflammation.
The largest sapphire in the world was discovered in 1995 in Burma and is called The Millennium Sapphire. It is a massive 61,500 carats and is exhibited world wide.

The Peridot Gemstone : The Stone of Emotional Healing

Peridot has enjoyed a recent rise in popularity. Fortunately, this increase in demand has been offset by increased production, especially from the fertile mesa of the San Carlos Apache reservation.

Peridot is a clean stone, the darker the green the better the stone. Some peridot can be very light and almost lime green, and thus is not highly regarded. And while peridot most always has an olive tone -- it's the gem variety of the mineral olivine -- look for stones that aren't overwhelmingly olivey. And as with all faceted gemstones, the cut should produce an even fire -- no large dark patches when you look directly down on the table. You should also ask to observe the stone in both incandescent and fluorescent lighting to get an idea of how the color and fire will change when you wear your jewelry under those lighting sources. Don't expect to find much large material from Arizona, most of the San Carlos production is under 3 carats. Chinese material is large but the color is usually inferior to specimens from Pakistan -- which currently produces the finest large quantities of peridot. Burma still produces incredibly stunning, large (30 carats and up) stones, but these are mainly collector's items as production is unreliable and accessible to a handful of connected gem traders.

Peridot is occasionally treated with colorless oil, wax, natural and synthetic unhardened resins into voids to improve appearance. Surface fractures are sometimes filled with a colorless hardened substance. These treatments should be stable if done properly.

Peridots are the birthstone for those born in August

The birthstone for the month of August is considered to be the lovely green gemstone, the peridot. Peridot is a semi-precious gemstone that is usually found in wonderful hues of translucent greens. It is also considered the gemstone for the 3rd and 16th anniversaries as well as the stone for the Zodiac Sign Libra. This gemstones is one of the few that comes in basically one color - green. There are varying shades from yellow green through to brownish green. The most valuable color is a dark olive green.

As with all gemstones, Peridot has some specific healing powers attributed to it. It is said to clear the heart chakra. It strengthens breathing, promotes prosperity, growth, and openness. It was used by Egyptians, Aztecs, and Incas to gently cleanse and heal the physical heart. Yellower gems also aid in problems of the stomach, liver and adrenal glands. Peridot helps wearers understand relationships, and other realities, alleviates depression, anger, fear, jealousy and anxiety.
The largest cut peridot weighs 310 carats and was found in the island of Zabargad in Egypt. It is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., keeping company with the Hope diamond.

The Ruby Gemstone : The Stone of Fire and Passion

Color is of paramount importance when judging the value of a ruby. Prized colors--which can command high prices--are pure reds with no overtones of brown or blue. Very light or dark shades are usually less valuable, but not necessarily less appealing. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and color preferences are subjective.

Of course, clarity, cut and carat weight factor into the cost of a gem. Better quality rubies are usually eye-clean with some inclusions under magnification. Ruby is more available under two carats, gems over five carats have become scarce. In ruby's finest quality, any size is rare.

Don't let yourself become overly concerned about the origin of the gem. A gem from Burma may not necessarily be better than a gem from Vietnam. If the ruby has a color that appeals to you, and a clarity that looks good, then that is more important than its nationality. However, it is important to buy from a reputable dealer who will provide written documentation about the ruby's size, and any treatments it has undergone. My Jewelz stands behind every ruby we sell.

Recently, rubies have been grown in the laboratory. Although these grown rubies are essentially of identical composition, hardness, and brilliance to natural rubies, they have aroused some controversy. Their presence of the market is still more limited than lab-grown emeralds, however.

When buying star rubies, look for a star that has straight legs that are all of equal clarity.

Rubies are the birthstone for those born in July

Rubies are considered both the traditional and modern birthstone for those born in July. It is considered to be the stone of the Zodiac sign of Capricorn, and is often given as a gift for the 40th anniversary.

The history of Ruby mining dates back more than 2,500 years ago. Rubies are found throughout the world and have been mined in most areas, but Burma is considered the area for obtaining the most valuable and highest quality rubies with deep red colors. The most important deposits are found in Myanmar, which is near Mogok in Burma. Although many rubies are mined, only 1% is of gem quality.

In a metaphysical sense, two magical elements are associated with red rubies: fire and blood, and they imply warmth and life for mankind. It is considered by many to be the gemstone which signifies everlasting love. Ancient legends state that one should not make faces at a ruby in a museum since this will make it grow dull. Ancient rulers even thought that a ruby would darken when it sensed danger, only to return to its natural color when the danger had passed. For healing purposes, rubies are said to be a general health protection and a help for backache and toenail problems.

The Pearls : The Symbol of feminine wisdom

The English word pearl originated (via French perle) from the Latin word perla. A "natural pearl" or "wild pearl" is one that forms without any human intervention at all, in the wild, and is very rare.

The Pearls : The Symbol of feminine wisdom
A pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is made up of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls (baroque pearls) occur. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries, and because of this, the word pearl has become a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable.

Almost any shelled mollusk can, by natural processes, produce some kind of "pearl" when an irritating microscopic object becomes trapped within the mollusk's mantle folds, but the great majority of these "pearls" are not valued as gemstones. Nacreous pearls, the best-known and most commercially-significant pearls, are primarily produced by two groups of molluscan bivalves or clams. A nacreous pearl is made from layers of nacre, by the same living process as is used in the secretion of the mother of pearl which lines the shell.

Pearls are the birthstone for those born in June

Pearls are considered the modern gemstone for those born in the month of June. Other charts also show the moonstone and alexandrite, but the pearl is the main stone associated with June, so I will discuss it for this series. The meaning of pearl is gem of the sea. Pearl is often used as a metaphor for something rare, fine, and admirable. It has been said that the pearl is a symbol of femininity, preciousness, and purity of heart.

The pearls can be of all types - freshwater, saltwater, faux or cultured. Most pearls sold today have been cultured, which means that some sort of material has been inserted into the mollusk to generate the pearl. Most people think of cream or white when they think pearls, but all sorts of colors are available from gray, through to yellow pink and other pretty colors. A genuine pearl formed in nature takes many years to produce and only a small percentage of mollusks that do produce pearls have the final product the size and shape needed for jewelry.

As with all gemstones, the pearls have metaphysical and folklore tales attached to it. The ancient Greeks believed that pearls were the hardened tears of joy that the Love Goddess shook from her eyes as she was born from the sea. Old Arabian legends say that pearls were made when oysters were lured from the depths of the ocean by the moon and then swallowed moonlit dew drops.

New age thinkers believe that pearls treat digestive disorders and relieve conditions of bloating as well as increase fertility and eases in the pain of childbirth.

The Emerald Gemstone : The Healer's Stone

When judging an emerald's value, its color is of paramount importance. The more vivid the green, the more valuable the stone. There are also attractive lighter green emeralds that are lively and vivid when set in jewelry and darker green gems that make up in rich green color what they lose in brightness. Generally speaking, however, very light or dark emeralds are less expensive. Unlike a diamond, a finely colored emerald is not significantly devalued by inclusions.

The fewer fissures, the more expensive the emerald. Cut natural emeralds of top quality weighing more than two carats are extremely rare and costly. A large deep green emerald with minor blue or yellow secondary coloration that is relatively free of inclusions may cost tens of thousands per dollars per carat.

Perfect natural gems--in color and appearance--are very rare and expensive. As part of the normal fashioning process, most emeralds are immersed in clear oil or resin to minimize the appearance of small fissures. In addition to oil and wax fillers, the trade also uses clear resins to penetrate open fissures surfacing in the gemstone. Hardeners are often added to solidify these liquids to prevent the resin from evaporating, thus making the enhancement more permanent than just oiling or waxing the gem. Be sure to buy from a reputable dealer who will provide, in writing, the processes and treatment that your emerald has received.

Because emeralds are brittle, and can split along their inclusions if exposed to sharp impact, properly designed jewelry should minimize the gem's exposure.

Emeralds are the birthstone for those born in May

Emerald is considered both the Modern and Traditional birthstone for May. It is also known as a birthstone for the Zodiac signs for Taurus and Cancer. Emerald is the only stone, other than the Topaz, which is listed as in all of the ancient birthstone tables. This emerald is also suggested as an anniversary gift for both the 20th and 35th anniversaries and can be used as an alternate stone for the 55th wedding anniversary.

Emeralds are mined from "host rocks." They have been found in many countries around the world, but those from Columbia are at the top of the list with jewelers and gemologists. Some of the best locations of Columbian mines are in Muzo, Coscuez and Chivor. Columbian emeralds are especially fine with a very shining emerald green which has very little bluish tint.

Emeralds have many metaphysical properties associated with them. They are said to improve intellect and memory and to help with tired eyes and insomnia. They supposedly give wearers the power to see into the future and are associated with greatness in business. They act as emotional stabilizers and help to release emotional trauma and help to govern perception of other's emotions. They are thought to be associated with the heart chakra and open the heart up to love, healing and peace.

The name diamond is derived from the ancient Greek αδάμας (adámas). Diamonds are thought to have been first recognized and mined in India, where significant alluvial deposits of the stone could be found many centuries ago along the rivers Penner, Krishna and Godavari. Diamonds have been known in India for at least 3,000 years but most likely 6,000 years.

Diamond is one of the best known allotropes of carbon. The hardness and high dispersion of light of diamond make it useful for both industrial applications and jewellery. Diamond is the hardest known natural mineral. This makes it an excellent abrasive and makes it hold polish and luster extremely well. Diamond is the hardest natural material known, where hardness is defined as resistance to scratching and is graded between 1 (softest) and 10 (hardest) using the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.

Industrial diamonds are valued mostly for their hardness and heat conductivity, making many of the gemological characteristics of diamond, including clarity and color, mostly irrelevant. This helps explain why 80% of mined diamonds (equal to about 100 million carats or 20,000 kg annually), unsuitable for use as gemstones and known as bort, are destined for industrial use.

Diamonds are the birthstone for those born in April

If you were lucky enough to be born in April, your birthstone is the king of gemstones - the Diamond. "White diamonds" - the traditional style of engagement ring diamonds come in a range of colors from colorless to yellowish. The colorless ones are the most prized. But diamonds are also available in a wide range of colors in all hues of the rainbow. Red, black, blue and green are the most expensive and most desirable.

A diamond is formed in nature, first as a rough chunk of carbon called lampriote or kimberlite deep within the earth. Over the passage of time and great pressures, the deposit reaches the surface, where it can be mined, polished and set in jewelry

India is thought to have been the first large source of diamond mining. Large diamond mining companies are found in South Africa, Russia and even Arkansas in the USA.
There are many metaphysical and folklore tales association with diamonds. In mythology, diamonds were thought by ancient Greeks to be splinters of stars which had fallen to earth. Some even thought they were tears of the gods. They also believed that Cupid’s arrows were tipped in diamonds. It makes perfect sense that this has translated, over the years, so that this lovely stone has acquired the reputation of being the gift of lovers.

The Aquamarine Gemstone : The Stone of Courage and Serenity

Aquamarine is always a shade of pastel blue, but darker, more saturated tones almost always cost more. Connoisseurs also prefer a pure blue, with no green in it. Stones with a tinge of green can be bought for less, and aren't necessarily less appealing to a consumer.

Because the color is generally pale, aquamarine should have a good clarity for maximum brilliance. These stones are often cut in ovals and emerald cuts. More saturated colors are unusual in small sizes: usually it takes some size for the color to hold in a darker shade. Flattering to almost any skin tone, aquamarine is a durable and lively gemstone that is appropriate for almost all jewelry occasions and wearers.

Aquamarines should never be cleaned with mechanical cleaners. However, warm water and mild soap can effectively remove oils and dirt, which can build up to dull aquamarine's blue color. Unlike emeralds, aquamarines are usually not treated with fillers, resins, or oils to reduce inclusions.

The advances of modern technology have made it possible, and very common, for aquamarine to be heat-treated to drive the green out of the stone and leave a more pleasing blue. This is a permanent treatment and has become accepted in the jewelry industry.

Aquamarines are the birthstone for those born in March

Amethysts have a long history of healing powers being attributed to it. It is thought to be of help for headaches, pancreatic ailments, and backache.
Aquamarine is one of the most popular gemstones, and is the birthstone for those born in the month of March.
The color of aquamarine varies a great deal. It can be any color blue from the lush blue of the Spring sky to the deep blue of the waters. Anyone who has seen a Mediterranean sea can understand why the stone is called aquamarine.

The word is derived from the Latin words "aqua" which means water, and "mare" which means sea. It is a form of beryl, the category of gemstones of which the emerald is also a part. The aquamarine is very clear with few inclusions.

A great amount of the world's aquamarine comes from Brazil, although it is also found in the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and even the USA.

Since the early times, the aquamarine has been thought to be a lucky stone. Folklore traditions state that it endows the wearer with happiness, courage and security. Some even say that it awakens love in a listless marriage. It is also thought to possess some healing benefits - including healing diseases of the liver, stomach, heart and throat.

The Amethyst Gemstone : The Stone of Spirituality

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and is a popular gemstone. If it were not for its widespread availability, amethyst would be very expensive. The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek and means "not drunken." This was maybe due to a belief that amethyst would ward off the effects of alcohol, but most likely the Greeks were referring to the almost wine-like color of some stones that they may have encountered. Its color is unparalleled, and even other, more expensive purple gemstones are often compared to its color and beauty. Although it must always be purple to be amethyst, it can and does have a wide range of purple shades.

Amethyst can occur as long prismatic crystals that have a six sided pyramid at either end or can form as druzes that are crystalline crusts that only show the pointed terminations. As a mineral specimen, amethyst is popular for its color and nice crystal shapes that produce a handsome, purple, sparkling cluster.

However, amethyst is not the same everywhere. Different localities can produce a unique amethyst to that particular region or even to that particular mine. Experts can often identify the source mine that a particular amethyst came from. The key to this is the specimen's color, shape of crystal, inclusions, associations and character of formation.

Amethysts are the birthstone for those born in February

Those born in the month of February have the royal privilege of having the amethyst as their birthstone. The color varies from pale mauve through to a deep purple, with the deeper and richer colors being the most valuable. It is a translucent gemstone with is fairly durable and has good wear ability factors.

The word amethyst comes from the Greek word "a-methystos", which means not drunk. It is thought to have a base in Greek Mythology with the goddess Diana turning a young maiden into a quartz statue to save her from Tigers. The god Dionysus wept purple tears, upon seeing this, which formed the now famous stone.
Garnets mines are found world wide with the most notable mines being in Brazil, Bolivia, Canada, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar (Burma), Namibia, Russia, Sri Lanka, United States (Arizona), Uruguay and Zambia.

The Garnet Gemstone : The Stone of Love and Devotion

Color is most important when determining the value of garnet. Lively, bright colors usually command higher prices than gems that are too light or dark. But remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and color preferences are subjective. Of course, clarity, cut and carat weight also factor into the cost of a gem. Better quality garnets are usually eye clean and very high clarity (not many inclusions) under magnification.

Almandine and pyrope (and a mix of the two) are the most common types of garnet on the market. Their widespread availability makes them extremely affordable (under $40 a carat). Rhodolite, particularly in its reddish colors, and spessartite in its bright orange red, are more uncommon and therefore more valuable than pyrope and almandine. Spessartite is commonly called Mandarin garnet because in its best color it resembles mandarin oranges.

The most rare and valuable of the garnet species are tsavorite (green grossular) and demantoid (green andradite). Tsavorite--in a lively, strong, bright green color--can command several hundreds of dollars per cart depending on quality and size. Demantoid, considered the queen of garnet, has exceptional brilliance, a higher dispersion than diamond, and a lustrous emerald-green color. A fine demantoid can command several thousands of dollars per carat depending on its size and quality. Demantoids are softer than other garnets, and must be protected from scratches and abrasions.

Demantoids have been very hard to find ever since its exclusive Russian sources dried up. A new Namibian mine has brought them back, but just barely. My Jewelz carries some excellent tsavorite and spessartite samples in our Gem Store. Garnet is one of the few natural gemstones not commonly enhanced to improve its color or clarity. However, garnet is often imitated. The laser industry has perfected some synthetic garnets with crystalline structures similar to the natural gem, but different in chemical composition (it's a non-silicate). Synthetic ruby and spinel are also used as a garnet simulant, as is glass, particularly in inexpensive birthstone jewelry.

Garnets are the birthstone for those born in January

Garnets are the birthstone for those born in January. It is also known as the gemstone for the second anniversary. People tend to think of garnets as being very deep red, but they are actually found in a wide color spectrum. In fact they are found in all colors except blue. Anyone who loves the sun baked colors of late summer will be attracted to this lovely stone.

Garnets are mined worldwide with many mines found in Madagascar, India, Brazil, the US, , and other locations. Unfortunately, not all garnets which are mined are good enough quality to use in jewelry.

The word garnet comes from the Latin word granatus. In nature, garnet crystals which were embedded in rock often had the color and shape of pomegranate seeds.

As with all gemstones, garnets have metaphysical connections. During the Middle Ages many believed that garnets would stop bleeding, since most are red. Some early cultures believed that garnets were helpful in preventing and curing infections and blood disorders.

Garnets have been known to Man for thousands of years. It is even said that Noah used a garnet lantern to help him steer the ark through the dark night. Early Egyptian, Greek and Roman times all have evidence of jewelry made from this beautiful gemstone.
